Commissioned in 1807 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, the Walhalla Memorial is one of the earliest examples of a deliberately planned memorial site. Modeled after the Parthenon in Athens, the neoclassical structure was commissioned to be an eternal monument to German culture and achievement through the ages. Ludwig was not the first monarch to found a memorial site in the area, however; in 1000, Emperor Otto III established the pre-Christian temple, Adelburg, to honor the dead of Donaustauf. Ludwig's initial plan for the memorial was to honor all contributors to German history, both civilian and military, though it eventually developed into a memorial for those who had contributed to the arts, sciences, literature, and politics. The bas-reliefs on the walls of the interior of the memorial reference mythology, religion, ancient battles, and ancient and modern German history and culture. Ludwig populated a pantheon of German luminaries by inviting all German kings, emperors, and members of the intelligentsia to submit the names of their greatest countrymen. Over time, the memorial filled up, and upon Ludwig's death, the 64 hallowed figures constituted the greatest achievements of Germany. By 2000, there were more than 200 figures honored at the site.
