History:

The Rosstrappe is a prominent natural rock formation in the Harz Mountains of Germany. It is about 32 meters (105 feet) high and is located near the town of Thale in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The first known mention of the Rosstrappe is in a 1725 report by Crown Prince Frederick I of Prussia, in which he described it as "a jagged rock, like a wall… supported on both sides". By 1766 the name Rosstrappe had been given to the feature, after its resemblance to a horsehair (roscher) bed. The Prince of Prussia, a great admirer of the area, constructed a viewing platform at the top of the rock and named it the Jetty of Laughter. This was later renovated by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and visitors could ascend to the top via a set of stone steps, constructed in 1862. During the 19th century, the Rosstrappe became a popular tourist destination and was featured in numerous paintings and drawings of the Harz Mountains. It was also visited by numerous royalty, including German Empress Augusta and Crown Prince Wilhelm. In 1988, the Rosstrappe was declared a natural monument and given protected status. It remains a popular site for visitors to the Harz Mountains and, amongst other things, is still used for mountain climbing.
