History:

The Church of Our Saviour is an evangelical-Lutheran church located in Copenhagen, Denmark. The first church at this site was built in 1617, and destroyed in the Great Fire of Copenhagen in 1795. It was rebuilt in 1820, and extensively renovated and expanded in 1899-1902. The church is noted for its 64m corkscrew spire with an external spiral staircase. The Church of Our Saviour was the first church to be built on the Amager island, and was initially part of the village of Tarup. It was built as an independent 'dagger church' in 1617 but was destroyed by a great fire in 1795. The church was then rebuilt from 1820 to 1829 under the direction of Jensen and Fenger, and the church tower was covered with a spire designed by C.F. Hansen in 1842. The 1899-1902 restoration and expansion was conducted by architect Ludvig Fenger. The new spire was designed by Johann Otto von Spreckelsen and was 64 meters tall, with an external staircase circling around its surface, which quickly became a landmark of Copenhagen. The project also included new furnishings, including a new altar, pulpit, baptismal font and new seats. In recent years, the Church of Our Saviour has gained a reputation as a centre for spiritual life and contemplation in Copenhagen, and it is popular for baptisms, confirmations, weddings, concerts, and other ceremonies.
