History:

Beylerbeyi Palace is an Ottoman palace located in Istanbul, Turkey on the Asian side of the Bosphorus strait. The palace was commissioned by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1861 as a summer residence and was designed by Sarkis Balyan, the most important of the Balyan family of court architects. It has a total of 22 rooms and an extravagant Imperial Hall which was used for receptions and other ceremonies. When constructed, the palace was surrounded by extensive gardens and pavilions. In 1867 the palace was used by Sultan Abdülaziz and other members of the ruling Ottoman Dynasty. The palace became a second home for royalty during the summer months, as it was situated farther from the city in comparison to other palaces in Istanbul and provided a greater degree of privacy for the royals. At the end of the 19th century, the palace was used for foreign guests of the Ottoman Empire, among them Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1889. The last Ottoman sultans often used the palace for their visits to Istanbul. During World War I, Sultan Mehmed V and his staff stayed there, while his successor, Sultan Mehmed VI, lived there after his exile from Istanbul in 1922. In 1924, Beylerbeyi Palace was converted into a hospital and medical school.
