The Melik Gazi Mosque (Turkish: Melikgâzi Camii) is a mosque located in Kayseri, Turkey, and is regarded as one of the oldest and most revered mosques in the region. It was constructed at the command of Emir Celaleddin Karaaslan, also known as Melik Gazi, in the 13th century. The Melik Gazi Mosque is made up of two sections: the mosque proper and the mausoleum of the Emir himself. The main section of the mosque includes a large prayer hall with four columns and two arches supported with marble which lead into the roofed open-air prayer courtyard. The prayer hall also has a large dome with four apertures as well as four ipshids or arches that deliver natural light. The courtyard also contains an octagonal fountain used for ritual ablution. The mausoleum is accessed from the courtyard and is octagonal in construction with beautifully decorated walls and interior. The interior of the mausoleum is richly decorated covering all four walls with Quranic verses inscribed in Arabic. The ceiling of the mausoleum also contains intricately decorated motifs. The fourth tier of the minaret was added by the Ministry of Culture in 1996. The mosque is currently open for worship and is still actively used by the local community.
