History:

Kolossi Medieval Castle is located in the Limassol District of Cyprus, about twelve kilometers southwest of the city of Limassol. The castle is situated on a small hilltop, and is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Limassol District. The medieval castle was built by the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in the 13th century. The Order of St. John of Jerusalem was formed in the early 11th century in Jerusalem, to protect pilgrims from any harm. After the capture of Jerusalem during the First Crusade, the order moved to the nearby island of Rhodes, and it was from here that the knights were sent to Cyprus to establish Kolossi Castle. The Hospitallers were granted permission to build the castle by King Amalric IV in 1210. The castle consisted of a double wall structure, commonly referred to as a donjon, which had several floors of living accommodation. It was designed to protect the nearby town of Kolossi and the Commandery of the Grand Master of the island. The castle’s occupation changed several times throughout its history. In 1454, the castle was captured by the Egyptian Mamelukes during the siege of Rhodes and held by them until 1571. It then fell to the Venetians, who kept it until they were driven out by the Ottomans in 1581. The castle was given back to the Knights Hospitallers in 1614 when the island became part of the Ottoman Empire. Kolossi Medieval Castle has been renovated several times throughout its history. It is now a popular tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to explore the abandoned ruins and take in the incredible views of the surrounding countryside. It is also a great spot for photography, as the views from the castle are spectacular. You must visit one of these historical places in Cyprus on your Cyprus tour
