History:

The Vasa Ethnographic Museum in Cyprus is a museum located in the village of Vasa in the Nicosia District of Cyprus. The museum was opened in 1995 and houses a range of artifacts and photographs which document the changing landscape and culture of Vasa and its surrounding villages, shacks, and farms. It is one of the leading ethnographic museums in Cyprus and has become a major tourist destination in the region due to its extensive collections of artefacts, archival photographs as well as a selection of decorations, new and old. The museum's founding was a result of a series of successful archeological excavations that had taken place in the mid-1980s in the area which revealed several Neolithic settlements. The artifacts from these excavations were transferred to the museum and have since been joined by an eclectic range of antiques, among them 19th century objects, books and documents as well as rare audio recordings. The museum focuses on preserving the culture of the area and its surroundings and so features a variety of festival masks of the region, traditional baskets and a chapel of Byzantine icons. The museum is operated by the Vasa Municipality and the monies generated from visitor entrance fees support the upkeep of the museum and its exhibits. Of particular note are the museum’s outdoor exhibits which are set in the grounds in front of the museum. Here visitors can find a restored 19th century windmill, Mesopotamian oven, a traditional hand-press and a ‘kania’, the traditional method of storing dates, almonds and other produce. All of the exhibits have been collected by the Vasa Cultural Centre over the years and are by now regarded as an emblem of the area’s cultural heritage.
