History:
The House of Dionysos in Paphos, Cyprus was discovered in 1962 by Cypriot archaeologist Vassos Karageorghis. The site is believed to have been constructed between the 4th century BC and 1st century BC. It is an intact, multi-phased structure surrounding a courtyard, built from block work and decorated with figurative and floral reliefs. The name of the site references the Greek god Dionysos (known as Bacchus by the Romans). Dionysos was the ancient god of wine, grape-harvest, and theatre, as well as the patron of ritual madness and religious ecstasy. The various aspects of Dionysos are represented in the artwork and architecture of the House of Dionysos. The site combines properties from both Greek and the Eastern cultures. The statues found at the entrance suggest that the house was used for religious ceremonies, while its lavish artwork implies a wealthy resident who was probably related to the iconic Bacchic cult. In the inner courtyard, numerous Hellenistic sculptures - including a fractured statue of the god Dionysos himself, a human head and a winged horse - can be found. The motifs that decorate the walls include a grape vine, a large central lion, a sphinx, female figures in the acroterion of a temple, and a double-headed eagle. Within the main entrance of the house, there is a central pediment in the form of a trident, a representation of Dionysos. The House of Dionysos, Paphos, has become an important landmark in the study of Cypriot archaeology due to its intact and remarkable antiquity. In 2008, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Today it serves as an important archaeological site for visitors to Paphos.
