History:

The Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection is located in the center of Larnaca in Cyprus. It was established in 1983 by Dr. George Pierides, his spouse Nefeli Pierides, and the Pierides Foundation, with the aim of preserving the cultural heritage of Cyprus. The Pierides family owned a large number of archaeological and historical artifacts, many of them dating back to the medieval and classical periods. In 1988, the Pierides Foundation donated the entire collection to the Cypriot government in order to create the environment to ensure its preservation. Subsequently, a legislative bill was passed in 1989 which enabled the Cypriot government to create a national museum to house the collection. This museum, which is now known as the Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection, was inaugurated in 1994. The museum is currently divided into three sectors: the Historical Collection, the Archaeological Collection and the Iconographic Collection. The Historical Collection includes artefacts from the Byzantine period, the Venetian period, the Ottoman period, and the British period, while the Archaeological Collection includes artefacts from the Prehistoric, Classical and Medieval periods. The Iconographic Collection houses objects from the Archaeological and Clerical collections, and it is home to numerous icons, manuscripts, medals, and coinage.
