The ancient city of Marion in Cyprus is most famously known for being the location of both the stone inscription of Idalion in ancient Greek and one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Located in the north-eastern corner of the island, the city was established in the Bronze Age and went on to become a center of trade and commerce. A major feature of the city was its acropolis, which is literally a Greek word meaning “high city”. Located on a hilltop providing a commanding view of the area, the acropolis was considered a sacred site. It was here that the temple of Apollo Hylates was built during the 4th century BC, making it one of the oldest Greek temples on the island. Other parts of the city have since been excavated and include a theater, gymnasium, walls, necropolis, and various other structures. The city is also known for its natural springs, which were believed to have therapeutic and healing powers. The waters were said to be so pure and valuable that they were imported from the region. History:

Marion was an ancient city located on the south coast of the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. It was named after the goddess Maia, the daughter of Atlas in Greek mythology. The city was established during the Archaic period, around the 8th century BCE, and grew into an important trade center as a result of its strategic location and access to the sea. Marion became one of the most powerful and wealthiest cities in the region, boasting impressive fortifications and defensive walls. The city was closely connected with the Ptolemaic dynasty during the Hellenistic period, from 323 BCE to 30 BCE. During this time, it served as an important naval base and provided a link between the Egyptian-controlled Mediterranean and the Aegean. The Ptolemies oversaw an expansive trade network that extended throughout the eastern Mediterranean, and profits from their maritime activities helped to make the city wealthy. Marion maintained its prominence during the Roman period, in part due to the construction of the Via Caesaria, a major highway that passed through the city. It served as a key stop for travelers and merchants alike. Unfortunately, the city was eventually sacked by the Arabs in 647 CE, causing immense damage to the city and its port. Although the area was never truly deserted, Marion never regained the same level of prominence it had enjoyed prior to the Arab invasion.
