The Ancient Kourion Theatre, located in Limassol district of Cyprus, is an impressive structure built during the Hellenistic period (331 BC-30 BC) over the existing remains of a pre-existing Bronze Age settlement. The theatre consists of three major sections: the orchestra, the koilon, and an upper gallery. It originally had the capacity to accommodate around 3,000 spectators. The Ancient Kourion Theatre was constructed in the 2nd century BC with stones taken from the surrounding area. It was a theater designed in the traditional Roman style with a semi-circular orchestra and a large koilon section.The seats were divided into three sections – lower, middle and upper – and the audience’s orientation was towards the southeast. The theater was mainly used for religious and public events such as theatrical performances, musicals, and sports events. Later on, in the 3rd century BC, the theatre appears to have undergone enlargement in order to accommodate a larger number of spectators. An inscription found in the area implies that the koilon was divided among a number of private citizens in order to generate revenue for upkeep and repairs as well as to the Gods.
