History:

The original Agios Georgios Church is believed to have been constructed shortly after the Frankish conquest of Paphos in 1291. This building was destroyed, by earthquakes, and replaced with a larger one in 1647. This new structure was built in the traditional style of the period, with a dome and bell tower, and was used until the twentieth century, by the local Orthodox community. In 1922, the church was extensively renovated and the fourteenth century original features were revealed. During this renovation a mural, entitled Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, was discovered and is still very much in existence today. In addition to this, a fresco of Saint George slaying the dragon was also discovered, which is believed to date back to the fifteenth century. In 1962, the church underwent another renovation, where the entire structure was reinforced and minor repairs, including cleaning and plastering, were carried out. The interior of the church was refurnished during this same renovation and some mosaics and frescos were added.
