History:

The Varahicacos Ecological Reserve is located in Matanzas Province, Cuba, about 45 km east of Varadero in the Jaguey Grande. The reserve covers an area of 8 km2 of mostly low-lying semi-arid scrub forest and flat terrain. It was established on December 31, 1980 to protect a variety of endemic and migratory species in the region from hunting, as well as to study and promote local biodiversity and culture. The reserve is home to over 40 species of migratory birds, including the Cuban Parakeet and Cuban Trogon, which are both endemic to Cuba.
