Parque Céspedes is the central plaza in Santiago de Cuba, the second city of the island nation. It is named after Cuban national hero, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. The origins of the park date back to colonial times when it was part of the grounds of La Alameda (the gardens of Countess of Casa Bayona). It was first opened to the public in 1868 and soon became a popular meeting place, bustling with activity. In 1879, the Spanish built a statue of the Countess which still stands today. In 1881, a monument to Céspedes was erected on the western side of the park, commemorating his declaration of Cuban independence. It was later replaced with the current statue of Céspedes, unveiled in 1912. The park has been the site of many important historical events. In 1895, it was the backdrop for the "Grito de Yara" (Cry of Yara) which was a call-to-arms that helped launch the Cuban War of Independence against Spanish rule.
