History:

Florida Bar (also known as El Floridita) is a legendary bar and restaurant in Old Havana, Cuba, established in 1817 and frequented by writers, scholars, and celebrities including Ernest Hemingway and Nat King Cole. It is a major tourist attraction, known for its cocktails and the bronze sculpture of Hemingway perched at the bar. In 1817, Don Facundo Bacardi, founder of the Bacardi Company, traveled to Havana and opened a food court and bar named La Florida, meaning The Flowery, in a building across the street from today's El Floridita. The building was eventually sold in the early 1900s, and El Floridita established itself a bit closer to the harbor. In 1914, Constante Ribalaigua, an immigrant from Spain, took over the business and renamed it El Floridita. He hired some of the best bartenders in Havana and began to experiment with new cocktails, with one of them, the Daiquiri, becoming his most popular drink. Over the years, El Floridita gained fame as one of the most sophisticated bars in Havana. As the bar developed a reputation, celebrities and influential people from around the world began visiting. Among these were Ernest Hemingway, who was a frequent visitor and made El Floridita into a popular tourist attraction. In 1952, a bronze sculpture of Hemingway was made and placed at the bar, serving as a reminder of his contributions to the establishment. After Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959, the bar was nationalized and some of its most famous features, such as the bar counter and the Hemingway sculpture, were removed. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, El Floridita underwent a major renovation and many of its original features were restored.
