The Castillo de Atares is a 16th-century castle located in the Havana region of Cuba. Although it has undergone many changes over the centuries, it has remained largely unchanged since the 1591 Siege of Havana. The Castillo was originally a colonial fort of the Spanish colonial period, and was built to defend the city against pirates and other hostile outsiders. The fortification was designed to withstand the most powerful of cannons, and was set with 37 canons as its primary defense. It was the largest fortification to exist in Cuba at the time. In 1586, the Spanish Crown sent troops to assist in the defense of the then-infamous port of Havana due to its location in the Caribbean, a hot spot for conflict. In 1589, the Spanish Admiralty commissioned the first engineer in charge of the Castillo’s designs, Don Diego Como de Leuquer. The fortress was completed by 1591, and it played a key role in the 1598 Siege of Havana. During this siege, the Castillo was able to hold off the English vessels long enough to allow the Spanish to secure victory. The event effectively secured Havana from further English attacks and marked an important moment in Spanish colonial history. Over time, the Castillo de Atares was looted by pirates, it was used as a prison, it suffered further damage in an 1879 earthquake, and it suffered major damage to its upper structure during the 1898 Spanish American War. The Castillo de Atares was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Since then, it has been undergoing an ambitious project for its preservation.
