It is referred to as the "High Street" because it is located in the old city center of Havana. The street runs through the heart of Old Havana (Habana Vieja), connecting some of the city’s most iconic squares, churches, buildings and attractions. Calle Obispo originally served as part of the city's main commercial thoroughfare during Spanish colonial times. The street was first laid out in 1519, when the city was founded by the Spanish Crown. It was named after one of the first priests of the area, Father Obispo de Espinosa y Torroja. During the colonial period, it certainly was one of the most populated and most vibrant streets in the city, as merchants came in droves to sell their goods. During the War of Independence, Calle Obispo was considered to be one of the most important avenues in the battles against the Spanish colonial army. The most iconic moment of the battle came in 1895 when Cuban freedom fighter José Martí commanded the final battle of the revolution, with the victorious cry of “The war of independence is won!” coming from the streets of Calle Obispo. In 1898, when Cuba achieved its independence, the street was renamed “Calle de Maceo” as a tribute to Cuban General Antonio Maceo. However, 20 years later, the original name was reinstated.
