Saint Domnius Cathedral is the principal Roman Catholic cathedral in Split, Croatia. It is often referred to as the Cathedral of Saint Dujam (or, dominus) in the local Dalmatian dialect. The Cathedral was built on the ruins of a 4th-century Mausoleum of Roman Emperor Diocletian and is dedicated to Saint Domnius, the patron saint of Split.
It is one of the best churches in Croatia which you must visit.
History:
The construction of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius began in the 7th century AD, when the Roman Emperor Diocletian built a mausoleum as his final resting place. After the Empire's collapse in the 6th century, the site was abandoned and by the 10th century a cathedral dedicated to Saint Domnius was built, using stones from Diocletian's mausoleum. In the 12th century, Croatian king Stjepan Praska rebuilt the cathedral, adding a transept and a bell tower. Later in the 15th century, Englishman Henry the Navigator contributed the stained-glass windows. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Croatia.
