Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic parish church located in New York City. The original building was completed in 1841, making it the first Catholic Church built in the city following the Protestant Reformation. It was designed by noted Irish architect Patrick Charles Keely and was the only American building ever to receive a gold medal at the 1867 Paris Exhibition. The Church of the Assumption is located on 141st Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Central Harlem and continues to serve its congregation as a house of prayer and worship. History:

The mission of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was first established in the early 1820s, and the cornerstone of the original building was laid in February 1841. During the late 19th century, the large Irish immigrant population of Manhattan caused the Church to expand, and two new wings were constructed in 1878 and 1888. In 1926, the Church was remodeled, and the current elaborate gold altarpiece was installed. The Chapel of St. Brigid was also added during this time, and individual confessionals were made available for the congregation.
