Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob is a Catholic Parish located in Portage, Wisconsin. The Church was founded in 1865 by German immigrants and is the oldest parish of the Diocese of La Crosse. The first church that was built on the grounds was a combination of both Scholasticism and Assyrian architecture. There is a statue of St. Philip and St. Jacob in the front of the building, and it is believed to have been a gift from a donor. The church is currently under the direction of the Congregation of St. Joseph, a group of Benedictine Monks. The Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob was founded by German immigrants in 1865. It initially served as a mission church of the Moltke Catholic Church. By 1895, a new church had been built and dedicated to the Holy Family. Over the ensuing years, several renovations were made to the original structure including the addition of a portico over the front entrance. The Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob is the oldest parish of the Diocese of La Crosse and is part of the Roman Catholic tradition. The Reverend Fr. Andrew Primus serves as the pastor of the church, and it is located on the corner of Church Street and Jackson Street in Portage. The church boasts some unique features such as a copper-covered steeple with amazing staining glass windows.
