The site of the present-day Cathedral of St. Peter was first developed during the reign of Constantine I in the 4th century, when a large basilica was built on the site dedicated to St. Peter. This building was eventually destroyed by fire in the 9th century and replaced by the current grandiose structure. The main body of the church was completed in 1626 but was only opened in 1656 due to financial difficulties. The church underwent numerous renovations and additions over the centuries, most notably the addition of Michelangelo’s dome in 1590.
