La Selva Biological Station (LSBS) is a Biological Research Station located in the Caribbean lowlands of Heredia province in Costa Rica. It is part of the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), a nonprofit consortium that operates several field research stations throughout Costa Rica. The station is situated in the foothills of the Cordillera Central, in a tropical wet forest biome. The history of the LSBS begins in 1960, when, as a result of the efforts of Wilbur and Margaret Creech, an area was purchased and set aside for research and protection. For the next ten years, environmental studies and conservation activities were carried out by the Creech family on the station's lands. In 1969, the Organization for Tropical Studies, a multinational academic consortium, was established, and La Selva Biological Station was officially opened in 1971 with the goal of advancing knowledge through research and teaching in tropical ecology. Since then, the Station has served as a center of excellence for tropical research and teaching, hosting researchers from around the world. In the 45 years since its founding, La Selva has served as an invaluable research tool for many biologists, ecologists, and conservationists.
