History:

The Catarata Rio Celeste (Celeste River Waterfall) is located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park, near the town of Bijagua in the province of Guanacaste in northwestern Costa Rica. It is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the country. The waterfall is fed by two rivers, the Rio Celeste and the Rio Buena Vista, which converge to form an electric blue pool over which the falls cascade. The color of the falls and the pool is due to a combination of sulfur and calcium carbonate that is present in the waters of the rivers, and which is released when they mix. The waterfall was first discovered by the indigenous Maleku group who lived in the area, and to whom the Falls is of great spiritual importance. Later, it is said to have been ‘discovered’ by a Spanish conquistador, who is said to have marveled at the beauty of the Falls and declared it a ‘celestial river’. Today, the Falls is a popular tourist destination and receives thousands of visitors each year. It has also been declared a protected area in order to preserve its unique beauty for future generations. You must visit one of these historical places in Costa-Rica on your Costa-Rica tour
