History:

Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, located near the city of Santa Marta in Colombia, was originally an estate owned by one of the first governors of the region, Don Pedro de Heredia. Heredia acquired the land in 1535 and it remained in the hands of his descendants until 1810, when the Viceroy of New Granada authorized the assignment of the estate for the purpose of being a prison and customs office. In the beginning of the 19th century the estate was converted into the favorite residence of Simón Bolívar, South American liberator and leader of the fight for independence from Spanish rule. Between 1816 and 1820, Bolívar used the estate to run his government operations, and it served for many years as a meeting place for his closest allies and as a refuge to hide from political opponents. In 1830, Bolívar returned to the estate one final time, this time to die. He was originally buried in the main courtyard, but his remains were exhumed in 1842, and his mortal remains were transferred to Caracas, Venezuela, where he was reinterred in a large monument. In 1963, the estate was declared a National Monument of Colombia, and in the following years it was restored, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. Today, the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino is open to visitors, allowing them to experience the beauty and history of this building.
