History:

Viña Cousiño Macul is a winery located in the county of Lo Espejo, inside the Santiago metropolitan area in Chile. Founded in 1856 by Don Antonio José de Riofrío y Cousiño, Viña Cousiño Macul is the oldest Chilean winery. The winery has constantly been family owned since it was founded, and it is currently managed by the fourth generation of the Cousiño family. Over the years, Viña Cousiño Macul has become part of the history of Chile. Its products have been recognized both in the local market and in markets as far away as Spain, France and the United States. In 1870, the Cousiño family set up a winery to produce wine for domestic consumption and for export. The facility was located in the Santiago neighborhood of Ñuñoa and used three windmills to turn the grape press wheels. In 1892, Viña Cousiño Macul became the first Chilean winery to be registered with the local Chamber of Commerce. Since then, its reputation and influence have grown steadily. During this time, the winery began to produce some of Chile's best-known wines, including Macúl, Caballo Loco and Cruzat. In 1910, Viña Cousiño Macul opened a new winery in the municipality of Lo Espejo, which would become its main production facility. This winery was designed and built by French winemaker Eugène Boscas Durand, who brought with him many of the technical advances that had been pioneered in France's vineyards. For more than a century, the Cousiño family has been producing some of the finest wines in the country. In recognition of its long history and the quality of its products, Viña Cousiño Macul was declared a Historic Monument of Chile in 2015.
