History:

Founded in 1997, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Valdivia (MACVAL) is a Chilean institution that houses a collection of works by renowned Chilean and international artists. Located in the city’s Zona Franca, the museum was created to highlight and promote the best of modern art from the post-dictatorial era. The basis of the collection is the Carmen Thyssen Valdivia Foundation, which was created in 1996. Carmen Thyssen, of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation, and her daughter, Soledad Gutiérrez, as well as Pedro Sotama, have donated works to the collection. These works include paintings, sculptures, engravings, photographs, videos, installations and multimedia works, among others, from some of the most important artists of the twentieth century, such as Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Vlady, Matta and Luis Cruz Azaceta. The museum’s permanent installation, entitled The Milky Way, has been praised by critics for its beauty and innovative construction. The museum has also presented numerous exhibitions, such as Look to the Sky, Pedro Neurist, The First See, These, Good News, The Last Dinner, Between Process and Presentation and Spinning the cocoon, as well as various activities such as lectures, conferences and workshops.
