Baquedano Street is a major avenue in the Chilean city of Iquique. The street has been a symbol of the city’s development since the 19th century. The origins of the street trace back to the mid-19th century when Iquique was a small port town. In 1871, the area was declared a freeport, attracting merchants from both Chile and abroad. In order to meet the demands of the increased population and businesses, the city needed to expand, and the then-named “Plaza de la Victoria” street was renamed “Baquedano” in 1874, in honor of Manuel Baquedano, a national hero of the independence movement. Between 1878–1880, the city underwent an urban rebirth and expansion, spurred by a boost in the nitrate mining industry in the area. Baquedano Street began to emerge as the city’s main artery, with Haigh Paro and Balmaceda Streets (the only other major streets at the time) extending from it. At this time, the street was blessed with metallic lamps, telephone lines, and electric trams. As the city continued to grow, Baquedano Street was expanded and re-paved in the late 1940s, turning it into a major avenue. In the 1950s, the Chilean government saw the street as a valuable regional asset and designated it as a protected landmark.
