History:

The Plaza Sotomayor located in the city of Valparaiso, Chile is the main civic plaza in the city. It is named after the former Chilean President and hero of the War of the Pacific, General Manuel Baquedano Sotomayor. The Plaza has been the focus of many important moments in Chilean history. The Plaza first came into existence in 1865, when the Spanish Governor Ramon Freire de Andrade laid out the original distribution of Valparaiso. However, it was not until inauguration of the following President of Chile, General Manuel Baquedano, that the plaza reconstructed in a more structured form. General Baquedano constructed a statue in the square in honour of his friend and mentor, Admiral Lord Cochrane of Great Britain. He also ordered the swift removal of a line of old buildings to encircle the plaza and create a larger space in the heart of Valparaiso. When the construction was complete, various government buildings were also added to the square, including the Presidential Palace and the police headquarters. Over the years, Plaza Sotomayor has been the scene of important events, including an attempted coup d'état by the Chilean military in 1891. During this attempted coup d'état, President José Manuel Balmaceda, who was also a hero of the War of the Pacific, was taken hostage and taken to the Plaza. Fortunately, he was released unharmed. More recently, the plaza was the scene of a large anti-Pinochet rally in 1988 and in 2011, the plaza saw the arrival of President Sebastian Piñera. Today, the Plaza Sotomayor remains an important civic center in Valparaiso, featuring statues, public buildings, monuments and various traditional festivals throughout the year. It’s also a popular tourist spot and a cornerstone of Valparaiso’s long and rich history. You must visit one of these historical places in Chile on your Chile tour
