History:

Cerro Pochoco is an extinct stratovolcano located in Santiago, Chile, some 15 miles (25 km) from the downtown area of the city. It is part of the Chilean Coast Range and the highest peak in the district, at an elevation of 2,570 metres (8,430 ft). Cerro Pochoco has a high historical significance for Santiago, with remains of human habitation from the pre-Hispanic era having been found on the mountain. The original indigenous inhabitants of the area were a nomadic group known as the Mapuche people, and they believed that Cerro Pochoco held special spiritual power.
