History:

Casa Colorada, formerly known as the Casa de Polonia, is a historic building located in the San Borja sector of Santiago, Chile. It is one of the few patrimonial constructions from the 18th century left in the city. Originally the property belonged to Juan de Vargas, a Lieutenant Colonel of the Real Cuerpo de la Florestana, who ordered the construction of a stone house in 1793. Vargas was a member of the Spanish court and, as such, Casa Colorada was built in the traditional style of the period. The house was built to be robust, with thick stone walls and large and secure windows. In 1810 Diego José Monzón, a Spanish Jesuit, purchased the house from Vargas and his family after they moved back to Spain. In 1940, Casa Colorada was acquired by Pedro Mancera, who was the Polish Ambassador in Chile. He remodelled the exterior of the building to match those of the homes in his homeland of Poland, and as a result it was renamed ‘Casa de Polonia’. In 1948, the Casa Colorada was passed onto the Congregation of the Mission of the Fathers of St. Vincent de Paul, a French Catholic order. The house was restored to its former style and renamed ‘Casa Colorada’. The outer facade was painted with a cream-coloured plaster and the building was used as a residence for the congregation. After being abandoned in 1968, the house was restored in 1986 by the owner; the National Museum of Fine Arts of Santiago. In 1995, it was declared a National Monument, and has since been used as a cultural centre. Casa Colorada is currently open to the public for guided tours, and is considered to be a symbol of Santiago’s architectural heritage.
