History:

The history of Torres del Paine in Chile dates to the early 1700s when the province of Magallanes was first colonized by Spain. In 1849 the governor of Magallanes, Jose Menendez, set out to explore the region and discovered the towering granite peaks of Torres del Paine. He declared it a National Park in 1959, making Torres del Paine the first of Chile’s national parks. The park has since become world-famous, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. In 1922, a Swiss couple, Philippe and Dorthea Steffen, purchased the northern section of the park from a local rancher. Over time, they built up an impressive 102,000-acre ranch (called Estancia Steffen) which today makes up nearly half of the park. It was Philippe who is credited with early conservation efforts within the park, protecting the region’s native fauna and flora. The park continued to grow and national interest in protecting its fragile environment increased. In 1978 Torres del Paine was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and, in 1987, the park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Torres del Paine is a world-renowned destination for trekking, climbing, and wildlife viewing, regularly ranked among the world’s top 10 national parks.
