History:

Cerro Alegre is a hilltop neighborhood and one of the most picturesque districts in Valparaíso, Chile. Settled by wealthy merchants during the Enlightenment-era, the area became a vibrant and prosperous center for trade and social life. It was recognized as an exclusive and distinguished neighborhood. In the 19th century, earthquake and fire destroyed much of the historic district, but many of the original neighborhoods remain intact providing residents and visitors a glimpse into Valparaíso’s rich past. Near the beginning of the 20th century, the building of the first trams and funiculars gave way to the city’s golden age of cerros (neighborhoods). Artists, musicians, bohemians and foreigners made their way and found solace in the city – and Cerro Alegre was no exception. During this period of urbanization, a number of famous buildings like the United Club Hotel and Gervasoni Palace were constructed. In 1969, towards the latter part of the cerros’ golden age, a devastating fire destroyed over 50 buildings in Cerro Alegre and left the neighborhood in shambles. The citizens of Valparaíso banded together to restore the neighborhood and rebuild for the future. Today, Cerro Alegre is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
