History:
The Plaza de Armas in the city of Arica, Chile dates back to the time of Peru’s occupation and is still the heart of the city. The square was originally designed by the French urban planner, Antonio Raimondi, in 1856. The central fountain, however, is a more recent addition from 1962. The Plaza de Armas was originally known as Plaza de La Libertad. In the 19th century, Arica was an important port city between Peru and Bolivia. Peru had control of the square, and the Spanish-speaking citizens of Arica called the space “Plaza del Marisco” (square of the sea mollusks). Liberty Square was created during the “war of the Pacific” (1880-1883), which left Arica in Chilean hands. During this period, the name of the square was changed to “Plaza de Armas” in honor of Chile’s military victory. The plaza is a popular tourist destination due to its spectacular mountain and sea views, and for its vibrant nightlife. In the middle of the square is the impressive bronze fountain with depictions of local flora and fauna. Around the plaza, there are monuments and sculptures that have been erected to commemorate important events and people in Chilean history. Adjacent to the square, is the historic Iglesia de San Marcos, the city’s oldest religious building. Today, the Plaza de Armas is a symbol of Arica’s culture and history. The plaza is the site of many cultural and civic events, as well as demonstrations and festivities that take place in the city.
