Overview:

Cerro San Cristóbal is a hill in Valparaíso, Chile. It is located within the city limits, overlooking much of the city, including the central part and its port. At 885 m above sea level, it is the second highest hill in the city after Cerro Lukunku. It was the site of the first Shrine to the Virgin Mary built in Chile. Atop the hill is a funicular, the second oldest in Latin America, which takes visitors to the top of the hill. At the peak stands a 22m statue of the Immaculate Conception which was inaugurated in October 1908. The statute overlooks Valparaíso and the nearby Pacific Ocean. History:

Pre-Conquest Cerro San Cristobal, or Hill of St. Christopher, is located in the historic port city of Valparaiso, Chile. The hill and its surrounding area have served as an important marker in the native peoples’ history prior to the Spanish Conquest. At least two cultures are known to have inhabited the area, the Lloco people and the Quechua people. The Lloco people lived primarily along the coast, as noted in archaeological remains such as their pottery. The Quechua people, on the other hand, were located more inland and were known for their agricultural practice. Even though there is little remaining material evidence of either of these cultures, they both are known to have had ceremonial and religious sites at Cerro San Cristobal. Colonization Cerro San Cristobal takes on a new importance during the colonization of Valparaiso by the Spanish in the mid-1500s. By building a fortress on the hill, the Spanish created a safe haven from which they could monitor the harbor and protect their new settlement. This fortress, now known as Valparaiso’s Monumental Natural San Cristobal, was completed in 1591 and was funded and commissioned by Don Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish conquistador. It is considered one of the oldest and most important colonial monuments in Chile and South America. Modernisation In 1883, the first Chilean National Congress was held at Monumental Natural San Cristobal, making Cerro San Cristobal an important site in Chilean history and actualizing its symbolic representation of the unification of this new nation. The fortification was eventually declared a National Monument in 1941, and in 1977 the Monumental Natural San Cristobal was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protecting this important part of Chile’s history and culture. In the modern day, Cerro San Cristobal is a popular tourist attraction in Valparaiso, one of Chile’s most popular cities.
