History:

The Terrace of the Elephants was constructed between 1113 and 1150 by King Suryavarman II, at a time when the Khmer Empire was at its height. The site, which was then known as Phimeasak, was used by the royal court as an official gathering venue, and it is believed that the terrace hosted important public ceremonies during the kingdom’s Golden Age. It is thought that the king used this particular venue to access his spirits and to show his divine power and authority to the general public. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Cambodia.
