The São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) is a modern art museum located in São Paulo, Brazil. The museum was founded in 1947 by millionaire and philanthropist Assis Chateaubriand and initially housed the personal collection of the Chateaubriand family. In its early years, MASP was dedicated mainly to European painting, particularly from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. However, in 1959, the director of the museum, Pietro Maria Bardi, changed MASP’s focus and collection to become one of the first museums of modern and contemporary art in Latin America. Nearly all of MASP’s collection consists of works of art from the 20th century. To this day, the museum is considered one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in Latin America and the most important museum in Brazil. MASP has hosted numerous major exhibitions over the years, from the first monographic exhibition dedicated to Brazilian modernist painter Candido Portinari in 1950 to the major retrospective exhibition of Japanese designer Issey Miyake in 2013.
