Sugar Loaf Mountain, or Pão de Açúcar in Portuguese, is a prominent peak overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The mountain is composed of two peaks, "Sugarloaf" and "Urca," connected by a cable car system. The journey to the top of the mountain dates back as far as 1555 when a Portuguese expedition led by the explorer Fernão de Loronha scaled Sugarloaf, with the help of the natives, to use as a lookout point and to observe the coastline.
