Cataratas do Iguaçu National Park is located in Brazil, on the border of Argentina and Paraguay. It is home to one of the world’s most magnificent waterfalls, the Iguaçu Falls, a stunning spectacle of over 275 individual cascades. The park was established in 1939, making it older than the country of Brazil itself, which became a republic in 1889. The origins of Iguaçu National Park can be traced to the 1880s, when the Bandeirante colonists from Sao Paulo became fascinated with the natural beauty and wildlife of the area. Local explorer Afonzo Caminha received a royal grant in 1884 to explore and demarcate the borders of ‘Iguacoru’, which became the official name of the region in 1901. The area was initially home to local tribes, including the Kaingangs, as well as an indigenous bird species.
