History:

Canela Cathedral, located in Canela, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The first wooden chapel was constructed in 1732 and was regularly rebuilt due to being destroyed by fire. In 1854, a new church was built to replace the former, and was consecrated under the name of Our Lady of Rosary. In 1895, the city of Canela was recognized as a parish by the Holy See and thus decided to build a new, much larger church. At the time, the city was one of the primary economic centers in the region and its inhabitants had rapidly grown. Construction of the new cathedral began in1922 with the north side of the structure finished in 1928. Work continued and was finally under roof in 1932. Interior work began the following year, and while one extreme poverty at the time delayed the progress of construction, the cathedral was finally completed and consecrated in 1945. This architectural jewel has intricate and colorful designs of birds, flowers and angels that blend in with the original exterior of the old building. The Canela Cathedral has remained a prominent landmark in the region and continues to serve as the main religious center for the city of Canela and surrounding areas.
