History:

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) was founded in 1980, an initiative of the then Frontline States - Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe in order to advance regional economic cooperation and development. The first headquarters of the organization was established in Maseru, Lesotho in 1980. However, due to ongoing civil unrest and unrest in the country, it became necessary to move the headquarters in 1996 to Gaborone, Botswana. SADC was officially launched in Gaborone and the Secretariat was established in August 1996. The headquarters office in Gaborone occupies a three- Storey building that was launched in March 1997. The building was constructed using funds provided by the Botswana Government which had to its disposal funds from the provision of several Botswana tax-payer assistance. Under the auspices of the Japanese Government, the Japan Trust Fund provided additional funds. The Botswana Government continues to provide rent-free accommodation for the SADC Secretariat. The headquarters building provides administrative, financial and operational services and facilities to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the SADC Secretariat. The SADC headquarters is thus located at Fairgrounds Office Park, Gaborone, Botswana and its functions are coordinated and supervised by the Administrative Secretary. A number of permanent sub-agencies, organs and subsidiary oversight bodies are housed in the headquarters, including the Customs Union, Common Market Group, Infrastructure and Services, as well as operations on gender, environment, and economic and technical cooperation.
