The Kumakwane Monument is located in the village of Kumakwane, in the Central District of Botswana. It commemorates a major and influential battle that took place here on the 21st of August 1894. This battle was fought between the Amandebele people and the British, and resulted in a decisive victory for the British, 23 of the Amandebele killed in the fight. The Kumakwane Monument was constructed in 2003, to commemorate the events of the battle and to honour the heroes of the Amandebele people. The monument was designed by Beverly Moore and stands 10.2m (33ft) tall. It consists of two main components, a bronze statue of a warrior on a horse, and a large carved granite slab, depicting the history of the battle. The statue of the warrior is modeled on Tisolo, an Amandebele warrior who fought in the battle and is believed to have led the Amandebele forces. The warrior is shown with an assegai and shield, both of which were part of the Amandebele's traditional armaments. The relief on the granite slab shows the events of that fateful day in August 1894. It shows the British surrounding the Amandebele people and charging forward with the cavalry. The figures are all adorned with the classic British pith helmets.
