History:

Moremi Game Reserve is a game reserve located in the southeast part of Botswana, near the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park. It covers an area of 4,820 km² and was established in 1963 by Chief Moremi of the BaTawana Tribe. Moremi was the first game reserve in Africa to be established with the cooperation of a local tribal community. Chief Moremi granted the Government of Botswana land bordering the Okavango Delta in order to create a wildlife sanctuary, which he felt would help preserve the fragile environment and habitats of the delta. Moremi Game Reserve was officially declared by the Governor of Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana) on the 23rd of April 1963. Moremi is a mosaic of different habitats such as savannah, mopane forest, floodplains, lagoons and many other ecosystems. This diversity of habitats provides refuge to a wide range of species including lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, Cape buffalo, African clawless otter, hyena, hippo, elephant, giraffe, zebra, antelope, and over 400 species of birds. Today, Moremi is known as one of the best game reserves in Africa and receives thousands of visitors every year. The reserve serves as a flagship destination, highlighting the importance of natural conservation and the protection of African wildlife. With its unique habitats, incredible wildlife, and spectacular scenery, Moremi is a true testament to its visionary founder and remains one of the most spectacular areas of the continent to this day.
