Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a community based wildlife conservation initiative that was set up to help protect the endangered rhino populations in Botswana. History:

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) was established in 1992 in the Central District of Botswana with the aim of conserving and restoring the local black rhinoceros population. The sanctuary is located near the town of Serowe, and covers an area of 10 square kilometers. KRS is a private, community-based natural resource management project, created by the local Gogologodi and Bahurutshe people. The early years of its existence saw the relocation of over 30 black rhinos to the area. The success of this initial relocation was thanks to the sanctuary’s anti-poaching measures, as well as providing a safe habitat for the animals to feed and breed. The sanctuary now houses an estimated 350 rhinos, making it Botswana’s largest rhino population outside of the Moremi National Park. KRS has become a model for conserving the species in other parts of the continent, and its success has enabled it to expand its activities to include education and awareness, research, and habitat management. It is the only organisation in Botswana that is certified to train and equip community-based rangers in rhino conservation and anti-poaching strategies. KRS is also heavily involved in a local education programme targeting schools and local communities. The education programme promotes environmental awareness and teaches Botswana's youth to value wildlife for future generations. Due to KRS’s efforts, black rhino incidents in the area have decreased by over 97%, and the black rhino population is increasing steadily.
