Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross In Botswana: History,Facts, & Services

Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross is a cathedral of the Church of England in Birmingham, England. It is the Mother Church and seat of the Bishop of Birmingham in the Birmingham diocese and Province of Canterbury. The history of the cathedral can be traced back to 1820, when a House of Bishops report outlined plans for a district church for the rapidly expanding city. The construction of the first incarnation of the cathedral began in 1825, with the opportunity for a site to be provided for further expansion in 1882. The original building became the chancel of what is now known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Philip and the newly built cathedral was known as the Church of Holy Cross. The history of the cathedral since its dedication has since been one of continual development and expansion, culminating in its current form which was consecrated in 1905. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building, which has become iconic of Birmingham, thanks to its distinct Gothic architectural features and its prominent height. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Birmingham, and also contains the Cathedral Library, a space dedicated to learning, research and access to historical documents relating to the life and history of the cathedral. It is open to the public and provides services such as Sunday services and occasional concerts. It is also home to the St. Catherine's Quarter, a residential area established for cathedral staff, officiants and their families.
