Worship Method:

Trashi Yangtse Dzong, also known as Trashiyangtse Dzong, is a historical temple complex in Bhutan’s Trashiyangtse district, built in 1763 by Lam Ngawang Chhogyel. The temple is dedicated to the protective and powerful guardian deity of the four-sided fortress, known as Dorji Phagmo, and local legendary figures, including its founder Ngawang Chhogyel and Guru Rinpoche. At the temple, devotees of Dorji Phagmo gather to offer prayers and folk offerings. The traditional offerings to Dorji Phagmo include mantras, butter lamps, incense and sandalwood. The worshipers may also perform a ritual dance, called the chham, as part of their devotional worship. This cycle of prayer and offerings is performed to appease Dorji Phagmo and ensure the wellbeing of the local community. During the rituals, devotees also provide offerings to the local temple deities. The festival of Gyalpo Lhakhang is celebrated to honor the historical founders of the temple, including Ngawang Chhogyel, and to commemorate the Himalayan Buddhist saints who have visited and made offerings to the temple in the past. During the festival, meditation, chanting and dances are performed to invoke the blessings of the divine powers. In addition to the traditional temple worship, Trashiyangtse Dzong has also become a pilgrimage destination for Bhutanese Buddhists. Pilgrims come to the temple to partake in a holy site-based pilgrimage called kora. During the kora, pilgrims combine prayer and ritual circumambulation of the temple walls with meditative activities such as chanting, visualization, and prayers. The kora is a way of accumulating spiritual merit, and the practice is believed to bring long-term benefits such as peace of mind, wisdom, and ultimate liberation in the form of Nirvana.
