History:
Talo Village (also known as Talom or Talomgang) has a history that dates back centuries. The settlement was originally part of the kingdom of Bhutan, and during the 13th century, the village became part of the lho-dzong estate. According to records from the time, Talo served as a subsidiary estate of the lho-dzong for most of its history. The first mention of Talo village in written records dates back to the late 16th century, when it is referred to as Talom. In the 18th century, a local chieftain named Tshering Drukpa established himself as the ruling lord of the Talo Village. During this time, the village was unified under Tshering Drukpa’s rule and people from far away lands began settling here. To differentiate between them, Tshering Drukpa created the talo idling system, which divided the village into five administrative areas based on their geographical location. From the 19th century onwards, Talo Village flourished and was home to many artisans and craftsmen. During this time, the village saw an influx of craftspeople who produced various handicrafts, such as wooden masks, intricately carved metalwork, and decorative items. Today, Talo Village is still an important part of Bhutan’s cultural heritage. The village is home to a vibrant community of artisans who continue to produce traditional items and pass down their skills to the younger generations. Despite modern development, much of the village’s traditional architecture and culture still remains intact and is considered to be one of the most important centers of folk culture in Bhutan.
