History:

Taktshang Goemba or, more commonly known as the Tiger’s Nest, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic sights in Bhutan. Located at the edge of a cliff in the upper Paro valley, the cave monastery clings precariously to the side of the mountain and overlooks the verdant valley below. The monastery has a long and storied history, believed to have been discovered by the great Tibetan saint Guru Padmasambhava, otherwise known as Guru Rinpoche, in the 8th century. Padmasambhava was responsible for introducing Buddhism to the region, and it is said that he flew to the site on the back of a tantric consort in the form of a flying tiger. The existing monastery was built in 1692 by the fourth Druk Desi, Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye. It was then reconstructed in 1998 after a fire, but the sacred cave site remains as it did all those centuries ago. It has since become an important pilgrimage site in Bhutan and is considered to be full of spiritual energy.
