History:

Samdrup Jongkhar Dzong is a historical dzong or fortified monastery situated in the eastern part of Bhutan, in the district of Samdrup Jongkhar. It was first established in 1667 by Gyaldatshog, the 12th Druk Desi, ruler of Bhutan. Before that, the area had already been a trade and defense center for Bhutan. The dzong was further renovated and expanded in the 19th century by Tenzin Lama, the 12th Jigme Pawo (rule of Bhutan). At that time it became the regional administrative center and also served as a garrison to protect the Bhutanese people from the imminent incursion of British forces from Assam. The dzong has served as a granary, warehouse, arsenal, and strategic vantage point for centuries.
