History:

The Druk Wangyal Lhakhang is a beautiful temple located in Paro Valley, Bhutan. It was founded in 1644 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan. The building of this temple was made possible with the financial assistance of the fourth Druk Desi, Tenzin Drukdra. The temple is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, the great spiritual master who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. The temple is said to be surrounded by 108 chortens, built to protect the temple from evil forces and to ward off misfortune. Inside the temple is a unique bronze mandala which is believed to have the power to heal and cure diseases. There is also a large seated image of Guru Padmasambhava, representing the protective powers of this great master. Outside the temple there are two smaller temples, which are dedicated to the Guardian deities of the four directions, Lopsinging Pomda to the east, Chungchung Marpo to the south, Trulshig Lhakhang to the west and Adgar Lhakhang to the north. There are also several large prayer flags and numerous small prayer flags which are believed to bring peace and protection to the area. Every year, on Guru Rinpoche’s birth anniversary, people from all over Bhutan and the neighboring countries flock to the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang to celebrate and receive blessings. There is an annual festival in October during which locals offer prayers and offerings to the Guru. It is said that the Guru visits the temple three times every year, once during a special week in June, another during the Guru’s birth anniversary and the third time on the first day of the New Year.
