Royal Manas National Park is Bhutan's oldest and largest national park located in the south-central region of Bhutan. History:

Royal Manas National Park (RMNP) in Bhutan was first established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1966, making it the oldest protected area in Bhutan. It was subsequently upgraded to a national park in 1993 by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck in order to conserve the rich biotic diversity and natural resources of this region. RMNP is located along the southern foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, covering 1,057 sq km of Bhutan’s southern region, spanning across the districts of Sarpang, Zhemgang, and Pema Gatshel. It shares its borders with India to its south and east, and bordered by the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park in the north. The park is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including over 550 species of trees, 225-plus species of medicinal plants, and 315 species of birds. It is also home to large mammals such as Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and gaur, as well as rare species like the Hispid Hare, Pygmy Hog, Red Panda, and Golden Langur. The park has a long history and is of immense cultural significance. It is believed to be the site of the early kingdom of Khyeng, as evidenced by the presence of an ancient sacred dzong dating back to the 11th century. RMNP is also closely associated with Guru Rinpoche, believed to be the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan. It is believed that the Guru visited the site in the 8th century and blessed it with his power. The park is also home to some of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Bhutanese Buddhists. Today, Royal Manas National Park is managed by the Bhutan Department of Forests and Park Services, and is managed in accordance with the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
